Malleable Iron

Malleable iron, a type of cast iron possesses certain characteristics that can be markedly improved by a heat treatment process. This type of iron becomes very elastic after the process that makes shaping and forming of the material. Malleable iron has a reputation of being durable, tough, and wear-resistant. It is commonly used in situations where the task of high force application is involved. This is for the malleable iron fittings’ fabrication, for example.

Malleable iron is created by being cast in shapes and then taken through a hardening process by being heated. Ductile Iron

We can conceive of ductile iron as spheroidal graphite iron which, also a kind of cast iron, contains tiny alloy additives similar to magnesium. These additives creates a material capable of a wider range of deformation and a high degree of strength and resilience. The feature of ductile iron that stands out is the good tensile strength, the excellent fatigue strength, and the improved ductility.

Key Differences Between Malleable Iron and Ductile Iron

Microstructure:

Malleable iron has a carbon structure which gives it characteristic malleability and toughness.

Carbon in ductile iron is in the form of nodular graphite and this is what gives it such superior strength and malleability.

Strength and Durability:

While the strength and wear resistance of the malleable iron are good, the performance under extreme conditions may not be as good as that of ductile iron.

The ductile iron parts have a higher resistance to breakage and a greater capacity to bear the load. It makes them the proper choice for high-pressure applications.
